LACONIA, N.H. – Friday afternoon, Navigating Recovery hosted a group of health care providers, legislators and other stakeholders for a discussion on the impact of New Hampshire’s Medicaid Expansion program on the Lakes Region.

State Representatives joined social service leaders and beneficiaries of Medicaid Expansion to discuss the resources and supports Medicaid Expansion brings to the region. According to attendees, Medicaid Expansion provides access to care, fuels continued progress against New Hampshire’s mental health and drug crises, and helps New Hampshire reduce uncompensated care costs.

As of January 2018, 5,055 Lakes Region residents were enrolled in Medicaid Expansion, including 1,400 from Laconia. More than $42.5 million in Medicaid funding went to support area residents in the last state fiscal year, including more than $10.8 million for Laconia residents.

Without legislative action, Medicaid Expansion is set to expire at the end of 2018. The New Hampshire House of Representatives is expected to vote on the reauthorization of the program this week.

“We greatly appreciate the Representatives who were able to come, taking the time to listen to Navigating Recovery, Lakes Region Mental Health Center, and Health First explain how Medicaid Expansion is a key component of providing services to our clients and patients. We hope we were able to stress that Medicaid Expansion is a program that affects lives well beyond just the scope of health insurance, and is vital to helping someone get their life back on track.” said Daisy Pierce, Executive Director of Navigating Recovery.

“Medicaid Expansion gives Granite Staters in the Lakes Region, and all across the state, access to both preventative and life-saving health care,” said Jake Berry, Vice President of Policy at New Futures. “Not only is the program absolutely crucial to a healthy and financially-sound New Hampshire, but it also brings more than $400 million annually into our economy. As today’s attendees pointed out, it makes sense for our lawmakers to pass Senate Bill 313 and reauthorize the critical program.”
