Medicaid & ExpansionHealth Care Coverage

Image_1.png

Medicaid provides comprehensive health insurance coverage to low-wage families and children, pregnant women, veterans, people with disabilities, and older adults. It helps Granite Staters access the care they need to get healthy, stay healthy, and live in our communities, which has translated into better care and lower costs for us all.

Why It Matters

Over 187,000 New Hampshire residents receive health care coverage through Medicaid, with nearly half of recipients being children. The program covers everything from routine checkups and heart surgeries to cancer treatments and at-home nursing care. Medicaid serves as the nation's largest funding source for mental health and substance use treatment, providing access to vital services including medications, therapy, case management, peer support, and crisis care. For New Hampshire children, Medicaid provides early screening and detection services, allowing for timely interventions for developmental delays, behavioral issues, and chronic conditions like asthma—interventions that significantly improve long-term health outcomes and reduce future health care costs.

As the largest program New Hampshire operates, Medicaid strengthens local economies, benefits state budgets, and supports the workforce by keeping people healthy and productive.

Our Impact

In 2014, New Futures championed Medicaid Expansion, a program that provides health insurance to low-wage adults. Since its inception, more than 252,000 individuals have accessed health insurance coverage through this program. New Futures has continuously worked to ensure the program continues to help individuals access the health care services they need. In 2016 and in 2018, New Futures and partners advocated for the reauthorization of Medicaid Expansion, and in 2023, championed a seven-year reauthorization. However, the program faces potential repeal within 180 days if federal funding falls below 90% of program costs—a concern as the federal government currently considers structural changes to federal funding for Medicaid programs

In 2025, New Futures is working with the NH Medicaid Matters Coalition to protect Medicaid from threats to funding at both the state and federal levels. Learn more here.
