New Hampshire's addiction crisis has stolen the lives of thousands of our friends and neighbors.  For years, New Futures has led the charge to establish a system that assures access to substance use treatment services for all who need it.

Why It Matters

Over the last 10 years, more than 6,000 Granite Staters have lost their lives to overdose. During that time, health care providers, policymakers, individuals and families impacted by addiction and countless others have worked tirelessly to establish a network of substance use treatment services capable of meeting the needs of our state. They have greatly expanded the number of treatment providers operating in the state, mandated insurance coverage for treatment, ensured access to treatment over telehealth and increased access to court diversion and other criminal justice programs to keep individuals with Substance Use Disorder out of jail and in treatment. Thanks in great part to these efforts, New Hampshire’s overdose death rate has fallen from one of the nation’s highest to the middle tier. Still, with hundreds of individuals dying each year, and thousands more experiencing overdose, there is much work left to do to end the addiction crisis and ensure access to treatment for all those who need it.

Our Impact

For many individuals struggling with Substance Use Disorder, a lack of health insurance is one of the main barriers to accessing treatment.  Nearly a decade ago, New Futures played a leading role in helping establish New Hampshire's Medicaid expansion, and we have worked tirelessly ever since to ensure the program remains in place providing insurance coverage, and access to treatment services, for all Granite Staters in need.
