Call Script: What to Say When You Call Your Legislators

A phone call is the most effective way to contact a legislator when advocating on a specific issue or bill. It is helpful to prepare beforehand.

Tips for Calling Legislators

• Be conscientious of what time you are calling a legislator.
• Keep conversations short and respectful of a legislator’s time.
• If you would like to have a longer conversation, ask to set up a meeting.
• If they do not answer, leave a brief message with your name, the town in which you live, and your phone number.
• Senators have a staff person who answers their phone.
• Representatives’ phone numbers are their personal numbers, so sometimes a family member will answer the phone. Politely ask to leave your name and number with them.

Finding Your Legislators' Contact Information

Every New Hampshire resident has one state senator and one or more state representatives. These elected officials represent particular towns and/or districts in New Hampshire. Your residency determines who your legislators are. You can look up your legislators below.

If you are contacting members of a particular committee, you can find their contact information on the General Court website under the Standing Committees.

• In the Senate: On the Senate Standing Committees page, click on the committee name, then click on each committee member to find their contact information.
• In the House: On the House Standing Committees page, click on the committee name, then click on each committee member to find their contact information (You'll want to include the Chairman, VChairman, and committee members).
