Sentinel Opinion: Untapped aid; More outreach is needed to inform parents about child-care subsidies

A lack of affordable, quality child care is one of New Hampshire’s major challenges. The price of child care has forced some parents out of the workforce at a time when businesses need workers.

Child care can be a young family’s single highest annual expense, exceeding housing, food and health-care costs, the N.H. Fiscal Policy Institute says. A state-funded Granite United Way survey completed in October found that 39 percent of families pay between $150 and $300 per week per child, while 24 percent spend more than $300 per week.
