This Week at the State House (week of 1/20/25)

We’re back for week two of the legislative session! New Futures is tracking several key bill hearings next week - scroll down for ways to take action.

Hearings on Tuesday, January 21

10:00 AM: HB 60 - Housing Security for Older Adults (House Housing Committee, LOB Room 305)

For over 40 years, New Hampshire law has protected renters from arbitrary evictions. HB 60 threatens to remove these protections by allowing landlords to evict tenants without providing a reason when their lease ends. This could exacerbate the ongoing homelessness crisis and negatively impact the health of Granite State children and adults.

Hearings on Thursday, January 23

2:30 PM: HB 226 - Legalizing Drug-Checking Equipment (House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee, LOB Room 202)

Overdose deaths from opioids continue in New Hampshire due to an increased flow of fentanyl into the state. It is more important than ever for New Hampshire to adopt evidence-based reduction strategies to save lives. HB 226 would legalize the use and distribution of test equipment in New Hampshire.

Recapping Last Week

Opposing Mandatory Minimum Sentencing: The Senate Judiciary Committee held public hearings on SB 14 and SB 15 last week. Next, the committee will hold an executive session to vote on a recommendation for the bills. There's still time to email committee members to urge them to vote against these harmful bills.
